There are changes to the policy of using collection agency in the library that come to effect immediately:

• Every time when overdue loans are sent to be collected to the collection agency all overdue fines of the same customer are sent at the same time, too.

• Also magnetic keys can be sent to be collected.

The tarmac work at the Otaniemi Campus Library courtyard area has been forced to postpone to 7 December, until which there is no parking area available.

Improvement work of Otaniemi Campus Library courtyard area has begun. Parking space is partly or completely out of service during weeks 47 and 48 (22 Nov - 4 Dec). The improvement work as a whole will last until June 2012. Particular caution is to be complied near the improvement site. The site area is fenced, and entering the area is strictly forbidden.

The library sells second-hand books during week 45 (7-11 Nov).

Now we have access to SAGE Research Methods Online database which contains:

• over 600 SAGE books
• dictionaries
• encyclopedias
• journal articles
• videos

To use Aalto Direct you need to be a member of Aalto University staff and have an Aalto University library card. An internal mail address is also needed to deliver the book to you.

There are three options to choose from:

   1. If the book is available or "Not charged", we will lend the book and send it to you by internal mail.
   2. If the book has been borrowed by another customer, we will make a request and send the book to you when it is returned
   3. It is also possible to agree, that all the books you have reserved (using Aalto Direct or otherwise), will be delivered to you by internal mail

Aalto Direct covers book deliveries from all campus libraries: Arabia, Otaniemi and Töölö.

The Aalto university wants to reward its personnel who made the achievements possible in this demanding situation. In honor of this, the university is offering all current Aalto employees an extra day-off on ‘Aalto-day’, 3 June 2011. The student and staff restaurants at Aalto campuses will also be closed on 3 June.

Please remember that the libraries are also closed on Ascension Day, 2 June and that the opening hours of 1 June are limited.

The library has acquired full access to the SPIE Digital Library at least until end of 2011. You can access the database via Nelli portal.

The SPIE Digital Library is the most extensive resource available on optics and photonics, providing unprecedented access to more than 200,000 technical papers from SPIE Journals and Conference Proceedings from 1990 to the present. More than 17,000 new technical papers are added annually.

The Ellibs e-book service now authenticates, like the rest of our e-resources, based on user IP-address. This means that off-campus use is possible only for Aalto University students and staff via Aalto authentication.

Now anyone can access the Ellibs material in all campus libraries, not just Otaniemi as before. This includes all customers, including the ones who don’t have Aalto identifiers. Also, off-campus use is now available for all Aalto staff and students, not just the ones who have Otaniemi library cards.

Logging in to the Nelli portal with HSE, Taik or TKK identifiers is not possible after Sunday 8 May 2011. After this Nelli starts using Aalto identification.

Unfortunately the MySpace accounts in Nelli can not be converted from the old to the new user names. Please save the references in your bookshelf to eg. Refworks or some other reference management system. You will need to find and save your preferred databases, journals and alerts again after the new log-in begins. The MySpace accounts created of the old TKK identifiers will be deleted on Monday 9 May 2011, so please save the data you need before that.

There will be service breaks in Off campus access of the Nelli portal on Monday 9 May 2011.

Logging into Nelli portal through a school-specific user id of the Helsinki School of Economics, the School of Art and Design or the School of Science and Technology are replaced by logging in through a personal Aalto user id and password.

The cash register of the Otaniemi Campus Library will be migrated to Aalto IT environment on Friday 15, April during which the library cannot receive any payments. We hereby ask you to pay your fees at another time or to use our web payment service instead.

Aalto University Library's new regulations and service charges become effective from 1.4.2011 at Arabia, Otaniemi and Töölö campus libraries.

The library aims to harmonize regulations of the three campus libraries to provide equal services across the campuses.

The most significant changes for Otaniemi Campus Library concern overdue fees which rise 0,20 € for textbooks and 0,10 € for other books. Aalto University staff will no more be charged for overdue items.

Along with the reform for regulations and charges borrowing and returning of books can easily be done either at Arabia, Otaniemi or Töölö campus library.

Overdue fines can now be paid online in TEEMU database via web banking . Online payment is possible for Nordea, Sampo and OP customers.

You can find the "Pay fines" link in TEEMU database at the top-right of the page. The payment will be registered in your account in a few days.

There are two ways you can log into your TEEMU account:

1. With your library card number, surname, and PIN number.
2. With your Aalto username and password.

You can no longer log in with the Unix username and service password of Helsinki University of Technology.

Please note when logging in that you have to select "Aalto University" from the list of schools, instead of "Helsinki University of Technology" for instance.

Customer workstations of the Otaniemi Campus Library will be migrated to the Aalto environment on Wednesday March 9, 2011 from 10 AM. It takes several hours. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

After the migration you can use workstations with your Aalto username and password.

OECD iLibrary - working with OECD statistical information, data and analysis

OECD staff will demonstrate the recently launched OECD iLibrary for users in Finland. The seminar will give practical insights into how to use OECD iLibrary as a tool to access and work with data, analysis, and statistical information from the world's largest inter-governmental think tank.

OECD iLibrary offers integrated online access to all OECD forecasts, reports, books, journals, working papers and statistical databases. It includes interactive features for users to work with data, build their own statistical datasets and easily export them in several formats.

The seminar is targeted at researchers, analysts, journalists, lecturers from universities, research centers and monetary institutions, as well as all organisations in Finland with a need to access and work with OECDs wide range of data and analysis.

The presentation will also provide detailed information to librarians and information specialists with the responsibility for managing access to OECD data for end users within their organizations.

You can now log in to TEEMU using the Aalto identifier.

Aalto publication platform was launched 17th January. University's dissertations, reports, and other publications are from now on putted together and ordered via the platform. Various types of publications have their own individual layouts which are based on the Aalto University visual identity.

Links to the platform and instructions can be found straight from the Aalto Inside front page under the Tools section. Instructions within Aalto Inside are located here: https://inside.aalto.fi/display/AboutAalto/Aalto+publication+series. To use the platform you need a specific ID of which the link above provides further information.

When producing a publication on the platform ISBN and ISSN numbers are automatically created at the same time for both printed and electronic versions. The authors do not need to request ISBN numbers for their publications anymore.

The publication series are common to the whole Aalto University, and so the previous series of Helsinki University of Technology are no longer sustained.

Copying machines of Otaniemi Campus Library have been replaced by new machines. All machines are now capable of making colour copies. For the time being printing to the copy machines from the customer workstations is not possible.

The Charging practice of colour copies has changed. Now each colour copy charges double amount of copies from a copy card compared to black and white copies. The prices of copy cards are the same as before.

From 21th to 24st of June the Voyager Library System is not in use due to the version update. The library will be open as usually:

On Monday and Tuesday: from 8 am to 6 pm
From Wednesday to Thursday: from 8 am to 4 pm

There will be restrictions in the library services because of the interruption in the Voyager System.

The following services will be in use:

• Borrowing: If you have a valid library card, you can borrow material from the shelves, you can also collect books you have reserved and you can borrow course books.
• You can return books.
• You will have access to the electronic material.
• You can use the Tenttu database.

The following services are not in use:

• You cannot renew your loans.
• You cannot pay your fines.
• You cannot make reservations.
• You cannot apply for a new library card nor make any changes to your patron information.
• Overdue, item available and courtesy notices.
• The TEEMU database. The service break of the TEEMU database will start already on Sat. June 19 at 10 pm.
• Universal Borrowing.

Information received in the survey helps us to understand customer needs and to respond to them with high-quality service.

In March 2010, the LibQUAL survey was carried out at the Aalto University Library. LibQUAL is a standardised survey organised by the Association of Research Libraries consortium (ARL), which is based in the USA and which enables the collection of the opinions of customers on the quality of library service and in which direction the service should be developed. The Aalto University Library sent invitations to participate in the survey to 30,200 customers who responded on an internet form. The period for responding lasted three weeks from 15 February to 5 March. A total of 5,240 responses were received, representing a response rate of 17.4%.

The Aalto University Library is composed of three campus libraries:

• Aalto University Library, Arabia (former University of Art and Design Library)
• Aalto University Library, Otaniemi (former Helsinki University of Technology Library)
• Aalto University Library, Töölö (former Helsinki School of Economics Library)

Before the creation of the Aalto University Library, these libraries had previously participated in a LibQUAL survey: Arabia and Otaniemi in 2008, and Töölö in 2006 and 2008.

Survey participants were asked to say which campus library they chiefly use. The number and percentages of responses by campus were: Arabia 750 (18.8%), Otaniemi 2,901 (15%), Töölö 1,576 (22.8%).

Prizes to tempt respondents helped in the achievement of a good response rate. These prizes were a laptop computer and gift tokens for Tector and Stockmann.

The respondents' general level of satisfaction with the quality of library service was good. For answers received to the question 'how would you assess the level of service provided by the library?', the average was 7.22 (on a scale of 1-9).

The local use of the library has decreased and the use of the library through internet pages has increased. An increasing number of respondents (84%) used search engines such as Google every day.

The LibQUAL survey has 22 key questions, which are divided into three categories according to their subject: AS = affect of service, IC =information control, LP = library as place. Each question is divided into three sections. Respondents were asked to say, on a scale of 1-9, what level of service they would desire for the matter in question, what would be the minimum level that they would find acceptable, and thirdly, what level they currently perceive. The results of the key questions are shown in the radar diagram:

• IC-6 Easy-to-use access tools that allow me to find things on my own
• IC-7 Making information easily accessible for independent use
• IC-8 Print and/or electronic journal collections I require for my work
• LP-1 Library space that inspires study and learning
• LP-2 Quiet space for individual work
• LP-3 A comfortable and inviting location
• LP-4 A haven for study, learning, or research
• LP-5 Space for group learning and group study

The narrower the yellow area in the diagram is, the nearer the level of service performance perceived by customers is to their desired service level. The width of the blue area, on the other hand, indicates how far the perceived level is from the minimum acceptable level of service: the narrower, the nearer.

Green areas might also be visible in the diagram (perceived level higher than desired) or red areas (perceived level lower than the minimum acceptable level). In this year's Aalto University diagram, the only colours are yellow and blue. We are nearest the minimum level and furthest from the desired level in question IC-1 ("making electronic resources accessible from my home or office"), so in that respect there is the greatest room for improvement. We are nearest the desired level in the question AS-1 ("Library staff who instil confidence in users"). In general, we can say that we are nearest to the customers' desired level in matters concerning access to customer service, and we are furthest in questions concerning materials and tools. In matters concerning facilities, however, we can see that the levels desired by customers are lower than elsewhere, so expectations in such matters are lower.

Because the LibQUAL survey was done in March and the customers responded to it based on their previous experiences, we can consider that most of the results concern the period prior to the formation of Aalto University. If we examine the results of the three campus libraries separately, we can see differences between them. These differences include the order of importance given to questions concerning customer services. Here the importance is decided from the average of the desired levels of each question relating to level of service: the higher the desired level is, the more important the respondents consider it to be. Users of the Arabia campus library consider customer service-related matters to be most important, whilst at Otaniemi it is the remote use of the library's internet pages and electronic materials, and at Töölö it is the internet pages and customer service.

Problems resulting from the switch to Aalto University, which have badly affected the use of electronic materials since the beginning of the year probably had a major effect on the results concerning materials.

In the survey, it was also possible to give verbal comments, and 2,302 (42%) of respondents did so. These comments were looked at separately for each campus library. Prominent comments concerned the availability of electronic materials, collections, the availability of course books, opening hours, staff and facilities. The comments were both positive and negative.

Analysis of the survey results is currently ongoing at Aalto University Library. From the statistical material, results are being analysed between different groups of respondents and schools/campus libraries. Based on these analyses, benchmarking comparisons are also being done against other external libraries. The comments are being categorised by theme and are being compared with the statistical analyses and, based on them, an action plan will be drawn up in autumn 2010. The next LibQUAL survey in 2012 will show whether or not we have succeeded in our reform programme.

A description of all new theses is saved in eThesis database. The students have the option to allow the electronic version of their theses to be published in the portal. About a hundred theses are listed in eThesis at the moment, and two thirds of them are available electronically. eThesis can be accessed through the Internet, so all the theses can be found using Internet search engines.

Save your research references using RefWorks and share them using RefShare

A great amount of sources are needed when writing your masters' thesis, doctoral dissertation or journal article. Be they books, articles, or any other sources, their references can be managed using RefWorks software. You can save the information about all of your research references to your RefWorks account, and they can be used also outside HSE domain. When you are writing your research text, RefWorks Write-N-Cite is a very helpful tool for creating the list of sources and the references within the text in the format that is required for your purposes.

Now you can also share your references using RefShare. You can share them partly, or all of them, if you wish. RefShare creates a web page where your references are available for other users to see, and (if you allow it) also to export. Possible purposes for a RefShare reference page are e.g. a reading list, a list of publication for your CV, or sharing references within a research group.

Each bank report contains balance sheet and income statement with up to 16 years of information. Bankscope also provides ratings, news and ownership information, and it is updated daily. Data from Bankscope can be analyzed using integrated analysis software or exported e.g. to Excel worksheets.

Bankscope can be used everywhere within HSE domain, and also from outside using proxy. The acquisition of Bankscope was made possible by the funding of the research project "Co-operative banks and the finance crisis: an international comparison", lead by professor Panu Kalmi.

The proxy server is available for HSE staff and students for enabling off-campus access to resources (e.g. electronic journals, library services, etc.) outside the HSE campus network. A valid staff or student domain network user ID and password is needed to access the resources. You don't have to configure your browser or create a one-time user id and password for authentication when using the new libproxy. The old proxy.hse.fi service will be removed during the beginning of next year (2009).

During the interview, the participating HSE students exchanged their viewpoints concerning the library and its services.

All in all, the general picture of the library was very positive among HSE students, and the library atmosphere was seen as a comfortable and calm. The participants regarded customer service as friendly and individual. In addition, some development ideas emerged during the discussion, which the library has acted upon during the summer:

- Since there is limited space for students, 12 calm reading places have been added to the 2nd floor.

- Furthermore, accessibility and the limited parking possibilities around the library aroused discussion. Change is forthcoming: a few customer parking lots will be built on the inner court by the time the construction work opposite the library is finished.

- According to customer wishes, the library will seek to speed up the circulation of textbooks. Supplementary course readings will be acquired to the library when necessary.

- Further information on information retrieval training is needed, and therefore communicating about the library's B.Sc. and M.Sc. thesis kick off sessions will be paid more attention to in the future.
